Endings and Final Escape

Quick Answer

The Escape the Backrooms endings list contains five outcomes: Wrong Door, Empty City, The Suburbs, The Pink House and Final Escape.

The Escape the Backrooms endings list contains five outcomes: Wrong Door, Empty City, The Suburbs, The Pink House and Final Escape. Complete the first four before using the special arcade machine for Final Escape. Reaching the ordinary Level 3999 elevator during the story is not the same as meeting that final-ending requirement.

This guide contains ending spoilers. The table identifies each destination first; the sections below explain how the routes fit together without turning every destination into a full level walkthrough.

The first story outcome is a starting point for further exploration. After Wrong Door, the M.E.G. base and Bunker connections let you work toward the other routes. You do not need to mistake the original ending for a requirement to create a brand-new save and replay every level from the opening Lobby.

Wrong Door after Level 55.1

Wrong Door follows completion of Level 55.1. That level uses camera objectives across its different floors, with the displayed photos telling you which subjects you must capture. Completing the route leads to the original story ending.

The important progression result is that the apparent escape is not the final successful exit. You wake in the research-base area and can continue exploring the additional routes. If you have only reached the library called The End or the ordinary Level 3999 arcade, you have not yet completed this original story outcome.

Avoid using the word “end” in a location name as a completion check. The library, the arcade's older “True Ending” label and the actual named ending outcomes are different things.

Empty City through the Grassrooms

For Empty City, use the additional route from the Bunker, complete Overgrowth and continue through the Grassrooms. In the current route, Level 421 comes before Overgrowth. Older directions that enter Overgrowth immediately from the Bunker doorway omit that later addition.

The Grassrooms route uses elevated paths, switches and a knife for rope-cutting tasks. Keep moving when you are on the grass rather than treating the floor as a safe place to stop. Completing the route reaches an elevator and the empty-city outcome.

The deserted streets in the Empty City ending

This ending puts you in a city without delivering the final successful escape. Track it as its own required outcome, then return to the available base connections for another branch. Do not confuse the city view with proof that the arcade requirement has been satisfied.

The Suburbs through the Infinite Staircase

Return through the Hub to Level 1, the Habitable Zone, and use the M.E.G. doorway reached by the upstairs route. Your ID card provides access to the staircase branch.

The Infinite Staircase repeats similar-looking rooms, making its marked destination more useful than counting identical turns. Look for the floor marked 94, then take the central drop associated with that ending route. Do not assume that difficulty-specific staircase generation in an older recording tells you exactly how many floors you must climb in your own run.

The ending's view of Level 94's hills and houses explains its name. It is separate from Darkened Suburbs at Level 9. Going back to the nighttime neighborhood and activating its computers is ordinary progression there, not the route for The Suburbs ending.

The Pink House through Lights Out

Return to Level 6, Lights Out, and use the Lidar scanner to navigate its dark passages. Before moving onward through the normal exit, use the M.E.G. door with your ID card. The additional dark route leads toward Level 974, Kitty's house.

There, the objective involves collecting 12 teddy-bear toys and placing them on the chairs. Their locations can vary, so a video showing one exact sequence of pickups is not a universal placement list. Search the house you are actually in and keep track of what has been delivered.

Mr Kitty at the doorway in The Pink House ending

Kitty is part of this route's danger and outcome. Keep an eye on the entity rather than assuming a pink domestic environment is harmless. Finishing the toy objective leads to The Pink House ending, another required result before Final Escape.

Final Escape at the arcade

After completing Wrong Door, Empty City, The Suburbs and The Pink House, return to the base and use the elevator connection to Level 3999. This brings you to the special arcade area for the ending machine. Interact with the relevant arcade cabinet to trigger Final Escape.

The prerequisite is the set of four other endings. The ordinary elevator code 931 only solves the earlier arcade's onward travel puzzle; it does not replace this ending requirement. Likewise, a guide demonstrating the final machine before completing every ending may show a historical progression bug. A June 2026 patch repaired that unintended behavior.

An Xbox arcade-interaction issue was also fixed in August 2026. If you are following an older report that says the machine cannot be used on Xbox, update before treating that old failure as a current platform restriction.

Keep a clear ending checklist

Use the actual outcome names when tracking completion:

  • Wrong Door from the original story route.
  • Empty City after the Grassrooms route.
  • The Suburbs from the staircase branch.
  • The Pink House from Level 974.
  • Final Escape from the arcade after all four prerequisites.

A visited level is not automatically a completed ending. Reaching the staircase entrance, walking into Kitty's house or finding the Grassrooms does not finish that route's objective. Record the outcome you reached, then choose the missing branch instead of revisiting an already completed destination without a reason.
