Escape the Backrooms is a solo or online co-op horror game for up to four players, with more than 30 levels. Progress depends on each location's objective: repairing something, opening a gate, solving a puzzle, surviving a chase or finding an exit. This wiki covers the game by Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive, published by Secret Mode. Backrooms fiction and other games do not share one interchangeable rulebook.
Use a level's name and landmarks together. “The house,” “the computer” or “the hotel” can refer to different places, and a level number alone does not always identify the section you need. The fastest useful lookup begins with what you can actually see.
Identify the place before following a route
The opening yellow maze is Level 0, the Lobby. A parking garage identifies Level 1, the Habitable Zone. The long pipe corridor is Level 2, while brick rooms, fuse boxes and Hounds identify Level 3, the Electrical Station. These are locations with different objectives, rather than floors in a straightforward numerical staircase.
Later areas include the Abandoned Office, Terror Hotel, Poolrooms, Darkened Suburbs and the arcade at Level 3999. You can revisit locations and enter additional sections, so seeing yellow wallpaper again does not necessarily mean your progress reset. Compare the room's puzzle, entrance and exits before applying the opening-level instructions.

| What you recognize | Useful subject to identify next |
|---|---|
| Broken ladder and loose wooden pieces | The Level 0 key route |
| Colored cars and an elevator | The Habitable Zone elevator puzzle |
| Brick corridors and fuse-box gates | Electrical Station progression |
| Office cubicles and security cameras | The Abandoned Office camera route |
| Hotel portraits and a dumbwaiter | Terror Hotel's opening section |
| Dark streets and a map beside a gate | Darkened Suburbs computer objectives |
| Arcade machines and a coded elevator | Level 3999's onward route |
“The house” especially needs a second identifier. Level 94 has hills and houses, Darkened Suburbs is the dark neighborhood at Level 9, and Level 974 is Kitty's pink house. A guide for one of these does not solve the other two.
Understand the Hub and the research base
The Hub is a connecting area with doors to different levels. It helps you revisit discovered routes; it is not a promise that every door will be available in a new session. An unopened connection needs its own progression, so a locked Hub door does not automatically indicate a broken save.
The M.E.G. base near the Hub also contains an early progression sequence. Entering it involves the security terminal, then restoring its lights, accessing a computer and enabling the gate application. Those are separate interactions. A desktop password cannot replace the word-matching puzzle outside the room.

After the Wrong Door ending, the base and Bunker become useful for additional routes and ending exploration. This is why an older guide that stops at the original story ending can leave out a substantial part of your available progression. Keep the main story route and later revisits separate when deciding what you have completed.
Carry items for a purpose
Almond Water restores sanity. Energy Bars help with stamina, while Juice gives a speed boost. Those functions are different: a movement item does not replace the sanity recovery you need during exploration. Liquid Pain is harmful, so do not treat every bottle as a beneficial drink.
A flashlight helps you see, and it is particularly useful against Hounds. Its effect is specific to the entity and difficulty. It does not make every dark place safe, and shining it at a creature is not a universal defense. Other areas supply task-specific tools, such as Bug Spray in the hotel, a Lidar scanner in Lights Out and a chainsaw for boarded passages.
Distinguish an item you consume from an object you interact with in the room. The broken ladder is repaired at its location; a security terminal is solved on its interface. Looking for either as a normal consumable in the inventory can send you toward the wrong action.
Read danger by behavior
Entities do not all react the same way. Skin-Stealers are threats you can break contact with by using suitable doors and hiding places. Hounds can be stunned with a flashlight, with stricter limits on harder settings. Partygoers make crouched movement and table cover valuable, while the electrical puddles in Level 3 remain dangerous even if you have successfully escaped a Hound.
Your in-game proximity voice chat is also part of the danger: entities can hear it. A teammate being nearby is helpful for communication, but loud conversation is not automatically safe during a stealth section. Keep instructions short when danger is close.

Check which version a solution describes
The PC edition left Early Access on October 23, 2025. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S followed on May 28, 2026, and Nintendo Switch 2 on July 7, 2026. Cross-platform play connects those editions. Current official descriptions use a four-player limit and more than 30 levels; older counts and temporary events should not override that baseline.
Level 421, Plastic Mariana, is released content added in August 2026. The October 29 Lost & Found update added cosmetics and fixes, so August's content patch should not be mistaken for the most recent update. Likewise, an old report about a progression bug may describe behavior that has already been repaired.
Use a detailed walkthrough once the location is identified. For a password, identify the exact lock; for a map, identify the exact section; for a return visit, identify which connection you have unlocked. Those three checks prevent most confusion caused by mixing a correct instruction with the wrong room.
