Escape the Backrooms is available on Steam as app 1943950. It is the Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive co-op horror game published by Secret Mode. The PC edition left Early Access on October 23, 2025, and now supports cross-platform sessions with PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.

Choose this exact title when buying or joining friends. Backrooms: Escape Together is a different game with its own Steam app, player limit and progression.

Current Windows requirements

As of November 1, 2026, the PC listing specifies the following hardware. These are requirements, rather than measured performance guarantees.

ComponentMinimumRecommended
Operating systemWindows 10/11, 64-bitWindows 11, 64-bit
ProcessorQuad-core Intel or AMD, 2.5 GHz or betterIntel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Older hardware pages may still show 6 GB of disk space or earlier processor examples. Use the current Steam requirement when preparing your PC. Storage space is separate from RAM: freeing 25 GB on a drive does not satisfy an 8 GB memory requirement.

Start a session with friends

For a Steam-only group, add friends through Steam and use the game's multiplayer invitations. You can create a private session for your group or join an available public session. The standard limit is four people, including the host.

For a mixed-platform group, use the game's cross-platform lobby joining features rather than assuming a Steam invitation reaches a console account. Update all copies before the session, confirm that the lobby has room, and let everyone load in before moving on.

Cross-play support does not mean a Steam purchase automatically grants another storefront's edition. Decide which device each person will use, then check that person's game access separately from matchmaking.

What the Steam game offers

The core experience is first-person exploration through 30+ distinct levels. You search for exits, solve environmental tasks, manage sanity and avoid entities with different behaviors. It supports playing alone or with up to three friends.

Proximity chat carries conversations between nearby players, and entities can hear you. If your group becomes separated, the loss of clear voice contact can be part of the level rather than a microphone fault. Test chat close together before a difficult section.

Steam Deck status and current fixes

The October 29, 2026 Lost & Found update announced Steam Deck verification. It also improved controller compatibility, text readability, touchscreen lobby highlights and changing the active controller type.

Verification should not be converted into a fixed frame-rate promise for every level or graphics setting. It is a platform compatibility status, and your display settings still affect the experience.

The same update fixed occasional PC microphone distortion, certain wireless headphone problems, and interface focus failures after Alt-Tabbing. If an old troubleshooting guide describes these as unavoidable, update the game before adopting its workaround. A current problem should be identified by its actual symptom, not by a launch-era list of bugs.
