Yes. Escape the Backrooms supports cross-platform play between PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. PS5 and Xbox joined the PC player pool on May 28, 2026; Switch 2 joined on July 7, 2026. The normal lobby limit is four players total, including the host.

You do not need an unofficial multiplayer mod to play across these platforms. Each player does need access to the same game, plus any online subscription required by their console.

The Nintendo release is for Switch 2. A similarly named Backrooms title on the original Switch is not evidence that it shares this game's multiplayer network.

Join the same lobby

Start by updating every copy before arranging a session. Have one player create the multiplayer lobby, then use the game's room-code joining option to bring the other platforms together. A Steam friend invitation is useful between Steam players, but it does not replace a cross-platform room code for a friend on a different console.

Check that the lobby has space before asking another player to join. Four means the host and up to three friends, rather than four guests. Once everyone appears in the same lobby, let the host start the session and confirm that everyone reaches the level.

Agree on who hosts before continuing an existing run. Cross-platform matchmaking establishes that you can play together; it should not be treated as a promise that every storefront purchase or save transfers between accounts. Keep ownership and progression questions separate from the ability to enter the same session.

When a room code fails

A failed join does not mean cross-play is unsupported. The August 27, 2026 patch fixed cross-platform lobby codes that could make friends appear offline or prevent connections. It also fixed Switch 2 problems when joining Steam-hosted lobbies.

Install available updates, check the code, and try a fresh lobby with a free slot. If the host has left, create another session instead of repeatedly joining the abandoned one. The October 29 Lost & Found update improved Switch 2 network error handling when a host leaves and fixed online functionality failing to return after launching offline and reconnecting.

If the game was opened without a connection, a clean restart after reconnecting is a reasonable first check. Record the platforms involved and whether failure happens before entering the lobby or while loading a level if it continues.

Check voice chat separately

Players can connect successfully while voice chat has a separate problem. The October update addressed wireless headphones, PC microphone distortion and Switch 2 voice chat stopping with an Xbox host. These are fixes to specific issues, not a reason to assume every silent teammate has an incompatible platform.

Test proximity chat while standing near each other in a safe area. Remember that entities can hear in-game voice. Keep callouts brief when approaching danger, and avoid confusing the normal effect of distance with a failed connection.
