Escape the Backrooms has 30+ levels, with a main progression route, repeat visits to some locations and later branches associated with additional endings. Level numbers are names, not a simple numerical order: Level 94 precedes Level 6 on the main route, and the game returns you to Pipe Dreams after the hotel.
Use the tables below to identify where you are and what environment comes next. They organize the progression without treating every subsection, revisit or ending scene as another entry in an exact total.
Recognize the opening progression

| Location | Recognizable setting | Main progression task |
|---|---|---|
| Level 0, The Lobby | Yellow wallpaper and the pit crossing | Repair the ladder, obtain the key and reach an exit |
| Level 1, Habitable Zone | Concrete garages and side rooms | Solve the cars, four keys, elevator search and Hub gate |
| The Hub | Doors connecting explored locations | Complete the terminal and computer detour needed for the garage gate |
| Level 2, Pipe Dreams | Long maintenance tunnel lined with pipes | Survive the first chase and take the Electrical Station opening |
| Level 3, Electrical Station | Brick utility rooms and fuse boxes | Activate nine boxes across three sections |
| Level 4, Abandoned Office | Cubicles, vending machines and security cameras | Count objects and pass the camera route |
| Level 5, Terror Hotel | Portrait lobby, guest rooms and Boiler Room | Complete the three hotel stages and find the signed exit |
The Hub is part of how you navigate progression, rather than a reason to expect the next numbered level behind every door. Some connections become useful after you discover their matching doors or obtain later access.
A subsection can also change the challenge without changing the familiar level name. The garage's car puzzle and its dark elevator search are separate tasks within the Level 1 progression; the hotel's guest rooms and moth maze are different stages of Terror Hotel.
Continue through Fun, pools and the castle

| Location | What distinguishes it | Main exit condition |
|---|---|---|
| Level 2 revisited | Return from the Boiler Room through another entrance | Reach the colorful Level Fun ladder opening |
| Level Fun | Carpeted party rooms and Partygoers | Use stealth and tables, then reach the Poolrooms slides |
| Level 37, Sublimity | Pale tiled pools | Find the route to the red-lit exit area |
| Level !, Run for Your Life | Red hospital-style chase corridor | Run past the obstacles into the exit |
| The End | Library-like room with a computer and tapes | Collect the required tapes and open the onward route |
| Level 94, Motion | Green hills, houses and a floating castle | Survive nights, solve the castle blocks and board the coaster |
| Level 6, Lights Out | Dark maze and LiDAR equipment | Reach the Level 7 exit using the scanner |
The End is not the game's final destination despite its name. Likewise, Level Fun is distinct from the later Level Fun+, where the objectives involve multiple sectors and keys.
Level 94 is another common naming trap. It is the daylight village with houses and a castle, while Level 974 is Kitty's House, an indoor toy-and-stage branch reached later. A search for “house” alone can lead to instructions for the wrong location.
Follow the flooded and suburban stretch

After Lights Out, the main route passes through water, caves and yellow sublevels before reaching the neighborhood. These transitions explain why you can revisit a familiar visual style without repeating its original objective.
| Location | Progression purpose |
|---|---|
| Level 7, Thalassophobia | Travel through the flooded houses, prepare for the dive and reach the underwater cave |
| Level 8, Cave System | Pass the moth caves and bridge before moving through the Skin-Stealer section |
| Manila Room and yellow return area | Solve the shadow-symbol locker puzzle and obtain the chainsaw |
| Level 0.11, Water Damage | Use the chainsaw and complete the timed lever objective |
| Level 188, first courtyard visit | Read the window pattern for the elevator route |
| Level 8 revisited | Continue from the other side of the earlier gap toward the suburbs |
| Level 9, Darkened Suburbs | Complete the marked house computers and enter the M.E.G. basement |
| Abandoned Outpost | Prepare the cure, treat the Wretch and obtain its keycard |
| Level 10, The Bumper Crop | Follow the field route and power the windmill generators |
| Level 3999 | Use the arcade area's elevator progression |
The two Level 9 gates serve different stages. House computers open the central base, while the keycard obtained in the Outpost opens the way toward Level 10. Reaching the basement is therefore progress within the neighborhood sequence, not the end of its required work.
Identify the later main-route challenges
The arcade does not mean the ordinary journey is already finished. Its elevator introduces another set of locations and mechanics.
| Location | Distinctive objective |
|---|---|
| Level 0.2 and Level 0.1 | Move between paired areas, open access and activate five generators |
| Level 6.1, Snackrooms | Restock and open the onward route |
| Level !~!, Hotel Chase | Use the pressure-plate sequence and escape the Clump through the correct corridors |
| Level 188 revisited | Transport the marked televisions through the elevator route |
| Level 37 revisited and Level 37.2 | Use the floatie boat, valves and water-level progression |
| Level Fun+ | Clear the four sectors and place their keys in the exit mechanism |
| Level 52, School Halls | Follow the Partypooper's movement through the school |
| Level 55.1 | Complete the photography objectives and take the lift onward |
A return visit can be much more substantial than the original location. The first courtyard visit uses a window-pattern elevator puzzle. The later Level 188 visit requires moving televisions while avoiding corridor and window threats. Reading only the level number is not enough to select the right instructions.
The pool revisit also changes the conditions. The earlier pale-tiled area is not a guarantee that later water is safe. The boat, valve tasks and hazardous water belong to that later progression.
Place Level 421 and the later branches

Level 421, Plastic Mariana, was added in August 2026. It sits on the later Bunker route that previously led directly toward Overgrowth. Its sequence includes numbered ball-container colors, flower projectors, a giant ball pit with lighthouses and a final four-hoop room.
After Level 421, the route continues through the Death Slides and Overgrowth progression, then toward the Grassrooms. Those areas use their own objectives: preparing the slides with lost wanderers, followed by platforms, a knife and timed doors in the garden-like section.
Two other later branches connect back to familiar levels:
- The Escherian Stairwell is reached from the card-controlled route above the Level 1 Smiler garage. Follow its in-level note for the stairwell escape condition.
- Level 974, Kitty's House is reached through the later M.E.G. branch near the Level 6 and Level 7 connection. A short LiDAR maze leads to its indoor toy objective.
These are branches to pursue with the required progression and access, not alternate early exits to assume are unlocked on a first visit. The final arcade resolution also depends on completing the required endings, rather than merely reaching Level 3999 once.
Use landmarks when counts and chapter labels disagree
“Level,” “part,” “chapter” and “visit” do not always refer to the same unit. A guide may give the hotel rooms their own heading, group the whole hotel into one location or count a return to Pipe Dreams separately.
For practical navigation, use these checks:
- Identify the environment you can see.
- Identify the current interactive objective.
- Check whether this is the first visit or a later return.
- Confirm the next environment before following another level's procedure.
For example, Partygoers beside stationary tables indicate the original Fun stealth route, while four sector entrances and a key mechanism indicate Fun+. Tapes in a library identify The End, while chairs and noisy toys identify Kitty's House.
The official 30+ description is the useful overall scale. For a run in progress, the concrete location and objective tell you more than an exact community count assembled from differently named sections.
