Microphone and voice fixes

Quick Answer

If your Escape the Backrooms mic is not working, first update the game, check which microphone your system is using, and test proximity chat while standing next to one teammate.

If your Escape the Backrooms mic is not working, first update the game, check which microphone your system is using, and test proximity chat while standing next to one teammate. Then follow the checks for your platform. A Windows recording-device problem, an Xbox party-chat setting and distorted PS5 input are different symptoms, so changing everything at once makes the cause harder to identify.

The October 29, 2026 Lost & Found update fixed occasional PC microphone distortion, certain wireless-headphone problems, Xbox wireless-headset issues and Switch 2 voice stopping with an Xbox host. Install available updates before applying a workaround from an older guide.

Identify what is failing

SymptomStart with
Nobody can hear you anywherePhysical mute and the system's selected input device
The microphone works in another app but not this gameVoice mode, device routing and a fresh game session
You hear the game but no teammatesOutput device, chat mix, individual mute and distance
Your voice is distorted rather than silentCurrent game update and a controlled input-level check
Only a cross-platform pairing failsGame builds, console communication permissions and a new lobby

A microphone icon is not proof that the other player receives usable speech. Likewise, another app working proves that the microphone can function, but not that this game selected the same device.

Run one controlled voice test

  1. Connect the headset before launching the game and check its physical mute control.
  2. Ask one teammate to join, then stand near each other in a safe area.
  3. Test a short sentence with only one person speaking at a time.
  4. Change one relevant setting, then repeat the same test.
  5. After changing the system's input device, close and reopen the game before retesting.

Distance matters because this is proximity voice chat. Testing from opposite ends of a level creates an avoidable ambiguity. Once chat works, remember that entities can hear in-game speech; keep the troubleshooting conversation away from danger.

Windows PC input and output checks

Open Windows Sound settings and select the microphone you intend to use as the input device. Check the output device separately so the game's audio and teammates do not go to a monitor, controller or headset you are not listening to.

If Windows lists several recording devices, inspect which one is set as the default. A headset microphone, webcam microphone and virtual audio device can all appear as different choices. Select deliberately rather than assuming the word “Default” always points to the headset you want.

For Steam, check the selected voice input as well as the Windows default. Community reports describe cases where explicitly selecting the headset resolved the mismatch. That is a useful routing check, rather than a guarantee that Steam settings cause every failure.

If a virtual or unused device is competing for selection, temporarily disable only that unused audio endpoint for the test, keeping your intended input and output enabled. Note what you changed so you can restore it. You do not need to uninstall an entire VR application simply because an old comment guessed that its microphone might be involved.

Check the game's voice mode

The game has voice-chat mode controls, including push to talk and an always-on option. Check the mode you are actually using. For push to talk, inspect your current binding and use that input during the test instead of assuming an old guide's keyboard key still matches your controls.

If always-on chat works but push to talk does not, focus on the mode and binding before replacing your headset. If neither works, return to system routing and muting rather than repeatedly increasing gain.

Restoring game settings to default has helped some players, but it also changes preferences. Note your current settings first, reset only if needed, then test before rebuilding your custom configuration. Do not stack a reset, gain change and device swap together: you would lose track of which change mattered.

Choose your own microphone and output device; this example shows Windows routing controls.

Xbox Series X|S party and privacy checks

If you are in an Xbox party, route speech into game chat or leave the party while testing proximity chat. Party chat and the game's chat are separate routes. Hearing a friend in one does not establish that your voice is reaching the other.

Check physical mute controls, headset connection and the console's headset microphone setting. Chat mix and volume affect what you hear, so distinguish an output problem from your own voice not transmitting. Mic monitoring lets you hear yourself but does not prove that another player receives you.

Review the account's communication and multiplayer privacy permissions, including cross-network communication for a mixed-platform group. A child account may require its family organizer to change the relevant permission. Do not try to fix an account restriction by repeatedly adjusting the game's input level.

If the issue is specific to a wireless headset, install current game and hardware updates before comparing it with an old report. Quit the game fully and restart with the headset connected. The current update specifically addressed Xbox wireless-headset behavior.

PS5 distortion and historical gain workarounds

Older PS5 community posts describe distorted, excessively loud voice and an unusual sequence involving input gain values. That sequence is not a universal modern fix. June 2026 patches addressed input-gain and voice problems, and later updates repaired additional audio issues.

Begin with the updated build, a sensible input level and a near-teammate test. If speech is already loud, raising gain further does not help identify the problem. Change one value and listen to the result before changing another.

Do not copy a PC-only launch command or Steam voice setting into PS5 instructions. The same principle applies to Xbox: keyboard bindings in a Windows video do not describe console controls.

When the basic checks pass

Create a new lobby and compare whether the issue follows one player, one headset or one host pairing. Record whether it begins immediately, after moving between levels or after reconnecting a device. The June patches addressed several cases of voice disappearing after loading or transitions, so the timing helps distinguish a recurring symptom from a basic mute.

On PC, verifying the installed game files is a reasonable later check if the correct device and mode still fail. Use Steam's file-verification option or the Xbox app's verify-and-repair route for the edition you own. Reinstallation should follow the simpler checks, rather than replacing them.

If you still need to report the issue, include the platform, game build, input device, host platform and exact failure pattern. “Silent,” “distorted” and “stops after changing levels” give different starting points. External chat can keep a group coordinated temporarily, but it does not reproduce the normal distance behavior of proximity voice.
